‘Who’ Series 9: River Song to return for Christmas special

Santa has come a bit early this year and delivered Whovians something from their wish list!

Actress Alex Kingston will be returning to her role as the Doctor’s wife (and attempted assassin — it’s a long story) River Song for Doctor Who’s 2015 Christmas special.

Her appearance will mark the first time the character, whose timeline runs reverse to the Doctor’s, will have appeared alongside Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi. River Song’s timeline has run primarily parallel to Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor, with one encounter resulting in her death during the fourth series with David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor.

Showrunner Steven Moffat teased, “The last time the Doctor saw her she was a ghost. The first time he met her, she died. So how can he be seeing her again? As ever, with the most complicated relationship in the universe, it’s a matter of time…” Moffat has previously noted the sentiments of former series runner Russell T. Davies on River Song’s limited tenure in the show, recalling, “I mentioned in passing to Russell that we were probably done with River. He said ‘You can’t be done with River! No, no, no. Capaldi and [Alex] Kingston, it’s a sex storm!”

Kingston revealed her excitement for the character’s return, commenting, “I met Peter for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”

Series 9 of Doctor Who premieres September 19 on BBC and BBC America, with the Christmas special airing December 25.
