‘Who’ Series 9: New monster revealed… and Odin!

Looks like the 12th Doctor and his traveling companion Clara will be coming face-to-face with a mysterious new enemy…and a Norse god!

The BBC has given fans a sneak peek of an as-yet-unnamed foe, currently only known as a “Block 3 monster,” that actors Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman will be encountering in the episode two-parter “The Girl Who Died” and “The Woman Who Lived” in the upcoming ninth series of popular sci-fi Doctor Who. To quote the Radio Times (and I concur), the monster (below, seen in the BBC’s initial teaser and on set in daylight) resembles “the Big Daddy suits from video game Bioshock”.

And the heavily-armored fiend is not the only new addition to the Ed Bazalgette-directed episodes — actor David Schofield (Merlin, Da Vinci’s Demons) has been cast as Norse god Odin, reportedly replacing the booming-voiced Brian Blessed, who is still in recovery from a heart condition that required him to pull out of a production of King Lear earlier this year. Schofield joins the already-announced Game of Thrones actress Maisie Williams in the adventures, set to be the fifth and sixth episodes to air this fall.
