November 18 is the official National Princess Day. While there have been plenty of amazing real-life princesses, the Daily Fandom has broken down the best fictional princesses from pop culture. Many pop-culture princesses come from Disney, but this is a comprehensive list that pulls from all over.
From tv shows, movies, comics, anime, and books, there is an abundant amount of totally badass princesses. Those on this list do not need a prince to save them because they are the ones saving the prince. With Frozen 2, Starwars, and the MCU being on top of their game, these women are some of the best role models of the year. Here are the top ten best fictional princesses in pop culture.
10. Star Butterfly
Princess Star Butterfly is the main character of Disney XD‘s Star vs. the Forces of Evil. She is a very happy and energetic girl who knows how to have fun. She is the 14-year old princess of the Kingdom of Mewni, a run-of-the-mill fairytale kingdom with magical creatures and magic users.
Star was able to use her magical abilities at the age of 14, but she was very irresponsible with them. Her parents didn’t know what else to do, so they sent her to Earth. On Earth, Star joined the Diaz family, where she started going to a normal school with normal kids. She became best friends with Marco Diaz, who is known as the “safe kid,” but is also a red belt in karate. Star is totally awesome and uses spells like Blueberry Cupcake Bazooka and Glitter Whale Battering Ram. Who wouldn’t think that was awesome?
9. Princess Yue
Princess Yue was the Northern Water Tribe princess in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Aang and the gang found the tribe and started training with the water bending master. Sokka fell in love with Yue on first-sight. Even though she was already promised to someone else, she began dating Sokka instead.
What makes Yue so amazing is that she gave up her life at the age of 16 to save her tribe and the world. When the fire nation came to take over the Nothern water tribe, General Zhao killed Tui the moon spirit that lived in the Spirit Oasis. When the general killed Tui, it threw off the spiritual balance. Iroh sensed that Yue had the same energy as Tui, so Yue sacrificed herself and became the moon spirit in Tui’s place. Even in later episodes, Sokka still thinks about her, but he is extremely proud of her and knows that she is always with him in spirit.
8. Princess Usagi Tsukino
Princess Usagi is also known as the soldier of love and justice Sailor Moon. Usagi is the 14-year-old daughter (and reincarnation) of Queen Serenity. Usagi is clumsy, hates homework and is always hungry. She was also known as a cry baby until she became more heroic and a better Sailor Moon.
Usagi is a loyal friend and will do anything for an ally, even if that means putting her life on the line. Even though she is stubborn and butts heads with her teammates, they always know she’ll do what’s right for them and the universe.
7. Princess Allura
Allura was the princess of Planet Altea and the last Sacred Altean. She is the only one that can command the Castle of Lions. When Keith took over the black lion, Allura started piloting the blue lion for the Voltron team. Allura is a great pilot, strategist, alchemist, and princess. She will do anything she can for her friends and people.
With everything she has been through, she wants to do what is right and is one of the many faces of the resistance against Galra. She wants to be able to redeem the family that she lost and the planet she lived on. She also wants to make sure this type of tragedy on her planet that is being destroyed never ever happens to anyone again.
6. Hinata Hyuga
While Hinata is not exactly a princess, she was the heiress of the Hyuga clan, so she still deserves to be on this list. When she was a child, she was very fragile and thought she would not be able to live up to being the heiress of the Hyuga Clan. Her entire life changes when she meets the infamous Naruto. Not only did she find the love of her life, but she also found someone to look up to and respect.
She found great strength in the fact that he was so strong and confident, even when others doubted him. She was appointed to be a part of team 8 after her graduation and Kiba, Akamaru, Shino, and Kurenai also helped her through the journey of becoming the best Hinata she could be. When Hinata grew up, she became an excellent kunoichi. She is also a master of her Byakugan and has great chakra control and prowess. She is now the wife of Naruto Uzumaki and has two children with him, Baruto and Himawari.
5. Princess Azula
Azula is the only daughter to Fire Lord Ozai and the younger sister to his son, Zuko. The only evil princess on this list, Azula is clever, sadistic, mean, obsessed with power, and extremely manipulative. Since birth, she has been a spoiled brat that doesn’t understand what kindness is. Despite all the malicious things she does, underneath all her power is a young girl with overwhelming jealousy of her brother and an unhealthy mind.
From a young age, she showed she was very strong with her fire bending abilities, even able summon lightning, a rarity for all fire benders. Her fire is even blue, meaning it burns extremely hot. You do not want to be under Azula’s rule, but that does not make her any less powerful.
4. Princess Zelda
While there are many different iterations of Princess Zelda, the version in Breath of the Wild is great. In this game, Zelda is not only a princess but also a studying scholar. Before keeping Calamity Ganon under control at Hyrule Castle, she was busy trying to understand ancient technology and how to unlock her sealing powers.
When she was finally able to use her power to save Link, she was also able to seal Calamity Gannon inside her castle and his powers at bay. Zelda showed her true strength in the 100 years it took Link to come beat Ganon once in for all.
3. Princess Koriand’r
Koriand’r, or simply known as Starfire, is a princess from the planet Tamaran. She was first seen in DC Comics Presents #26 and now has her own comic. Koriand’r has also been in three different iterations of the Teen Titans shows. She is usually seen fighting alongside the Teen Titans, but she sometimes works for Justice League or Outsiders.
Starfire is extremely strong, can fly at supersonic speed, can learn any language by kissing a person that can speak that language, and has blasters coming from her hands and eyes. She is not only extremely strong but also extremely kind. Even though she has been living on earth for some time now, she is still getting the hang of Earth lingo and how to live like a “normal” human being.
2. Princess Leia
Princess Leia (portrayed by Carrie Fisher) was first seen in the massively successful Star Wars film that came out in 1977. She is the daughter of Darth Vader and Padmé Amidala as well as the twin sister of Luke Skywalker. She is the adoptive daughter of Senator Bail and Queen Breha Organa. Princess Leia has been a model for women and little girls since the 1980s, going as far as to become a feminist icon. She is smart, snippy, and responsible for rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hut.
30 after years between Return of the Jedi, she is now known as General Leia and not a princess. She is the leader of the resistance and is still trying to defeat the dark side. Many things remain the same in her later years, but instead of her father being the evil leader of the dark side, it’s her son, Kylo Ren.
Shuri is the daughter of King T’Chaka and Queen Ramonda. She is also the sister of T’Challa, aka Black Panther. Shuri is the princess of Wakanda and the smartest person in all of Marvel’s history, including both Tony Stark and Bruce Banner. Beyond that, she is also a master engineer and scientist. She oversees the technology Wakanda is operating on. Shuri made her own vibranuim-fighting-gauntlets which included a powerful sonic energy blast.
She is a model princess. Not only does she not need a prince to save her like every other princess on this list, but she is also one of the smartest people in the Marvel universe and can sure all hell beat anyone that comes after her family kingdom.
These Princess Can Save Themselves
The definition for princess has changed in the last couple of decades. It is not a young girl waiting for her prince to come and save her from a fire breathing dragon in a high tower. It is a princess being able to take care of herself and give girls role models to look up to. The princesses on this list are a new type of princess that takes no crap, will zip line from the tall tower, and defeat the dragon herself.
