A Brief History of Orphan Black: the Where, When and How
Orphan Black is a Canadian TV show originally broadcasted on Space in Canada and BBC America in the United States. The show was created by Graeme Manson and John Fawcett. The series premiered in 2013 and it currently has two seasons. The third season is in the works. Both seasons have received very good critics and the lead actress, Tatiana Maslany, has been nominated for the Emmys twice. The fact that she didn’t win any was seen as an “outrageous oversight” by many critics. A comic book series will begin in 2015.
Why it’s Awesome
There are many reasons why this show has been one of the biggest revelations in sci-fi in the last 2 years.
For one, the plot is interesting and extremely well-developed. The premise is constructed in the very first 3-4 episodes and things only get more and more complicated from there. It’s a hell of a ride in which you’re constantly in the verge of your seat because everything keeps getting more exciting and dangerous with each episode. This is a show that knows its strengths and how to play them.
Orphan Black has also been able to do some things that many science fiction shows are failing to do: portraying underrepresented groups: We have a female lead character, people of colour, a gay man, a bisexual woman and a transsexual man. And none of these characters’ stories are only based on their gender/race/sexuality but on who they are and what they do. How great is that?
Last but not least, Tatiana Masley is AMAZING in her role and she’s able to portray a wide range of emotions and… well, spoilers!
