How to Get Away With Murder: A show that sounded like your typical average crime show but ended up being something much more awesome. I mean, look at the cover photo. Aren’t there enough reasons to start watching it just by looking at it?
In A Nutshell
Wes Gibbins is a Law student that signs up for a class taught by professor Annalise Keating. This is a very strict teacher that has a very competitive class fighting to be the best so that they can accompany her in her cases and win trophy that would save them from the final exam. Unfortunately, the chosen students end up getting involved in a murder.
Meet the Characters
Annalise is the main character of the show. She’s a lawyer and a Law teacher that is known for being successful, smart, blunt and incredibly strict. She’s admired by her students and fellow co-workers. However, we all know that everyone has a secret face that they’re not showing. This is the case with Annalise, whose marriage isn’t working as well as she had planned. Her strong attitude is later justified by a dark past.
Wes works as the second main character, next to Annalise. He’s a Law student who’s very nervous in his first day, and doesn’t think he’s as good as the other students. However, he proves himself wrong over time. He lives in a small flat, next to a noisy and mysterious girl. He believes in justice but ends up having to make some questionable decisions.
Connor, like all of the others except for Annalise, is a Law student. One of the bests. He often helps solving cases by seducing other men to get information. He’s known for having a very active sex life. Little does he know that one of these random hook ups could end up being something more.
Michaela is clever and takes her studies very seriously. She does everything she can to help Annalise win her cases and therefore earn her attention. She reeeally wants to win that trophy. She’s engaged to her long-term boyfriend, whom she loves very much. Out of all of them, she’s the most emotional and she tends to freak out very quickly.
Asher comes out as arrogant, sarcastic and a little too self-interested. However, he can tell what’s right from what’s wrong. And, when it comes to the important stuff, he’s usually the one who gets left out and is unaware of what’s really happening.
Laurel seems like the typical know-it-all that no one can stand. That is, until people actually take the time to find out more about her. Even though she also has a boyfriend, she ends up getting quite interested in one of Annalise’s co-workers. It takes a while for Annalise to actually like her.
A Brief History of ‘How to Get Away with Murder’: The When, Where and How
How to Get Away with Murder (often abbreviated ‘HTGAWM’) is an American show created by Peter Nowalk. It first premiered on ABC on September 25th, 2014. It instantly got very good ratings and good critics. It actually won and got nominated for several shows, including a nomination for a Golden Globe for ‘Best Actress’ in ‘Television Series Drama’ for Viola Davis (Annalise Keating).
There are many reasons why this show is awesome and why it hooked me up since episode 1. For starters, the characters are amazing and they all undergo constant character development. Especially Annalise Keating. Having a show with a strong female lead, up to four POC characters and a gay relationship valued for who they are and not what they are is amazing. Even though a lot of important issues are addressed (like the portrayal of black women in society), their race, gender or sexual orientation is never a key matter to be discussed. A sentence like “I’m so freaking mad I wasn’t born gay” seems like a simple joke but it means so much since we’re more used to hearing things like “I’m gonna turn gay”. There are also a lot of known faces: Viola Davis, Alfred Enoch (Dean Thomas on Harry Potter), Matt McGorry (John Bennett onOrange is the new black), etc.
Nevertheless, HTGAWM is a drama/crime/mystery show and it has elements of all those genres. But there’s also space for some comedy every now and then. However, the thing that you should expect the most are PLOT TWISTS, they are everywhere! The first half of the season is a continued build-up to the big mid-season finale. It’s intriguing, surprising and it never lets you down. Same thing could be said from the big 2-hour-long season finale. Let’s just say this: they were the best mid-season finale and season finale I’ve seen in a long while.
Bottom line, HTGAWM is intriguing, clever and sexy in a classy way. Just watch thetrailer and you’ll be instantly hooked!
