A Brief History of Serial Experiments Lain: the When, Where and How

Serial Experiments Lain is an avant-garde anime series directed by Ryutaro Nakamura, screenplay written by Chiaki J. Konaka, produced by Yasuyuki Ueda and with character design by Yoshitoshi ABe for Triangle Staff. It was broadcast on Tokyo TV from July to September 1998.

The series was conceived to connect across forms of media, and there is actually a videogame of it, although little about it is known. Serial Experiments Lain has become a cult classic not only for anime fans, but for Japanase TV in general, as it was intended to be “a sort of cultural war against American culture and the American sense of values Japan adopted after World War II”.

Why It’s Awesome

Let it be said, Serial Experiments Lain is not a series for everyone. If you usually watch anime for pure entertainment, you probably won’t get much of it from this show. However, if you like thought-provoking series, or you just want to try something new, then this is one of the best options the anime industry has to offer.

Serial Experiments Lain is a hard series to understand. In fact, it’s probably the anime series that has arisen the most online discussion, and even almost 20 years after its release, it’s still being discussed. The series was a very ambitious project that was influenced by themes such as reality, identity and communication and it does so through computer technology, religion and pseudophilosophy.

Its otherworldly art style and animation help create that feeling of uneasiness, while the unique electronic soundtrack by Reiichi Nakaido fits perfect with the cyberpunk themes.
