The BlizzCon opening ceremony has just wrapped up and it’s a big day for Overwatch and McCree fans. Let’s talk about the Overwatch BlizzCon Reveal!
Building up to the Overwatch BlizzCon Reveal, we predicted Jesse McCree would get a cinematic and we were spot on about it. However, where we expected the cinematic to revolve around existing lore, Blizzard opted instead to take an entirely new direction to introduce a slew of exclusively new characters.
The Overwatch BlizzCon Reveal
The McCree cinematic, Reunion, revolves around McCree facing off in true western fashion against six members of the Deadlock gang. The cinematic takes place outside the Route 66 Panorama Diner as Ashe and her band of Deadlock Rebels blow up a bridge and loot the train wreckage. McCree intercepts and demands the crate Ashe has loaded on a familiar looking payload.
After an epic showdown, McCree single-handedly out-shoots the Deadlock rebels and sends them blasting off again, tied to the payload. He then opens the crate and reveals the omnic depicted in early Overwatch concept art. Once activated, he informs her that Overwatch is more in need of her return than his and rides off into the desert on a sweet looking hover-bike.
While we were holding out for more Blackwatch lore, Ashe brings a whole new light to potential Deadlock lore we didn’t know we wanted. A McCree cinematic could have answered a whole darn lot of questions, but instead this cinematic raised so many more. And that’s just how we like it.
Wasn’t the Deadlock Gang shut down? What are the details of McCree’s past with Ashe? McCree even teases that the story of how he lost his arm is best saved for another time. We hope that’s a promise. But, for now, we’ll make do with being excited for the new hero.
SO Many Options…
Our initial reaction following the short was that the omnic, Echo, would be Hero 29. Jeff Kaplan drew out the suspense by hinting that one of the characters from the short could be Hero 29, but would it be the Deadlock Triplets? That cool omnic sniper? Or Ashe’s sidekick omnic, Bob? Or even Ashe herself?
Though Ashe drove a hard bargain with her spunky, badass appearance and the potential for more in-game witty banter between her and McCree (among others), Echo seemed to be the more likely contender. With her preexisting appearance in the Overwatch lore and her hinted past as a significant member of the original Overwatch team, she’s likely to have a much larger impact on the lore overall.
And, The Winner Is….
But as Jeff said, it’s a bit too soon to delve into Echo’s story just yet. Hero 29 is ultimately revealed to be the rifle-wielding Deadlock Rebel Ashe herself, with the added bonus of Bob as her ultimate. Cue the hootin’ ‘n hollerin’!
Thank You Kindly, Blizzard!
The McCree cinematic was gorgeous as always and more fun than even we could have hoped for. Ashe looks to be an awesome addition to the Overwatch family. We can’t wait to find out more about her abilities, what she can reveal about McCree’s past, and how she’ll stake her place in the world of Overwatch!
