Production on the Jurassic World sequel is picking up steam as we are starting to learn more details about the upcoming movie.
Jurassic World, directed by the relatively unknown Colin Trevorrow, was a bigger success than anyone could have expected and shattered box office records left and right. To date it has the highest opening weekend of all time, is the highest grossing movie in the Jurassic Park franchise, and is the fourth highest grossing film of all time, ultimately bringing in more than $1 billion. With profit like that combined with what CinemaBlend points out as a deceptively clever ending, the chances of a sequel were always very high.
The franchise seems to be opting for the same strategy as the new Star Wars movies by having exciting up-and-coming directors to helm each successive sequel. The upcoming fifth movie is set to be directed by J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage), which will surely bring some extra tension to the new film. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard have already confirmed that they’ll be returning for the fifth film, and now Variety is also reporting on the addition of new cast members. Rafe Spall and Toby Jones are both in talks to sign on for the next sequel, albeit there are no details as to what their roles will entail.
Jurassic World single-handedly managed to make the franchise relevant again and also helped to make fans forget all about Lost World and Jurassic Park 3. However, that relevance could still be carried further. For instance, given the continued success and new life that has been breathed into the franchise, it’s surprising that there haven’t been more video games to take advantage of the popularity. There were plenty for the original movie, including an awesome arcade game, but it’s been slim pickings for the sequels. Jurassic World received its own Lego video game adaptation last year, but we still feel that more could be done with the property. Elements of the franchise are still around with this page of online gaming resources featuring a Jurassic Park slot reel that pays homage to the original film, among a host of other licensed games and how-to guides – but it’s a far cry from a new blockbuster title.
Given the popularity of world building games like Minecraft and the recent Dragon Quest Builders, it would also be great to take another stab at something like 2012’s Jurassic Park Builder. The game put gamers in charge of creating and maintaining their own theme park, similar to RollerCoasterTycoon. We can only imagine what you could do with Jurassic World. Given the genetic experiments from World, we would love to have the ability to create our own dinosaurs by splicing different species together. Even better, it would be terrific if Universal put together a VR experience that fully immersed you in the park and allowed you to see and interact with dinosaurs in virtual reality!
Of course, this is all wishful thinking, but if the new movie is half as successful as Jurassic World, the studio would be remiss to skip out on such a golden opportunity. The fifth film in the Jurassic Park franchise is currently untitled, but it is currently scheduled for release on June 22, 2018.
