We previously asked for your opinion on which summer animes we should cover. Gangsta. is currently the winner, which is awesome considering that this might be one of the best, if not the best, anime of the season. At least it serves for as a great starter to the summer.
WARNING: Spoilers ofr the first episode!
Black Lagoon. That’s what came to our minds when we first saw the PV. Based on an on-going manga that has released 36 chapters so far, Gangsta. is a seinen labeled under the genres of Action and Drama. The synopsis is the following:
In the city of Ergastulum, a shady ville filled with made men and petty thieves, whores on the make and cops on the take, there are some deeds too dirty for even its jaded inhabitants to touch. Enter the “Handymen,” Nic and Worick, who take care of the jobs no one else will handle. Until the day when a cop they know on the force requests their help in taking down a new gang muscling in on the territory of a top Mafia family. It seems like business (and mayhem) as usual, but the Handymen are about to find that this job is a lot more than they bargained for.
Starting with what could be the best opening of the season so far, we are presented with our main protagonist duo: Nicolas and Worick. From the very first scenes, we see Worick as being the talkative one, while Nicolas prefers to stay in the background, being grumpy and doing the dirty work. However, as the minutes go by we realise something: we haven’t heard Nic talk yet. It turns out that Nic is actually deaf, which is something we don’t see very often in anime. And even less in a main protagonist. However, that opens the possibility of a lot of new scenarios: from seeing sign language, to people thinking that he’s a quiet man only to them be faced with his wrath. Either way, both characters are very appealing from the first minutes and I can see myself quickly becoming interested in them, their backstories and their relatinoship.
There is a third character that I believe will become quite important judging by the posters we’ve seen so far and that is Alex. Alex is a prostitute who believes she has no where to go. At the end of the episode, after they kill everyone from the brothel she worked at, they decide to take her. We still have yet to see how her relationship with the boys will be. Right now, all we know is that she’s taking the calls for Benriya. And yes, she physically reminds me of Revy too.
Based on what we have seen from this episode, the formula seems to be the typical “case of the week” with hopefully some Plot A scenes here and there. This episode focused on introducing the three main characters which means that we didn’t really get to learn a lot about this world. Except that the cops are corrupt and don’t really mind killing innocent people.
Again, this is a seinen so we will warn you that apart from the guns/murder/sex/drugs themes that you could also find in Black Lagoon, you will also find semi-explicit sex scenes here. And that includes prostitution and even dub-con, depending on how you look at it. So if you’re triggered by any of those themes, you have been warned!
Audiovisually speaking, both the drawing and animation are pretty good. I also like the use of light and colours, which reflect the mood of every scene perfectly. The streets of the city got a bit claustrophobic in some scenes, but I guess that’s part of the setting. Apart from the opening and ending, the soundtrack is amazingand fits the series perfectly.
There’s not much else to assume from just the first episode. We don’t even know how many episodes the series will have yet. All we can say for now, and without having seen anything else from this season yet, is that Gangsta. will be the most badass anime of the summer and it will also work as a way to fill the void that Black Lagoon left.
