A Brief History of Dragon Ball: The When, Where and How

Dragon Ball is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama. The series was originally serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 1984 to 1995. Two anime adaptations were produced by Toei Animation: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, running from 1986 to 1996. Many other anime versions like the original Dragon Ball GT (1996-1997), the faster-paced remastered version of DBZ, Dragon Ball Kai (2009-2015), and the new Dragon Ball Super (2015-).

There’s no denying the fact that Dragon Ball is probably the most well-known anime ever made. Aside from the tons of merchandising, the franchise expands to films, both animated and live-action, collectible trading card games, numerous action figures, soundtracks and many videogames.

Why It’s Awesome

Dragon Ball is a pure battle anime. There’s a lot of universe building, character development and adventure, but the main focus of this story is always on the fights. So if you like battle scenes, and debating with your friends over who could beat who in a battle, this is definitely the anime you should be watching. Dragon Ball doesn’t waste any time in flashbacks or moral speeches, it just cuts to the chase and what the viewers want to see.

One of the reasons why this show became so popular is that it offered very original concepts. From the Dragon Balls themselves to the Super Saiyan modes with the change of hair colour, there are many interesting and innovative elements to the story. There’s also no denying that many contemporary shounen mangas like One Piece, Bleach, Fairy Tail or Naruto have been inspired by Toriyama’s imagination.

Dragon Ball has plenty of characters but it mainly focuses on the main characters and the villains. As per Goku, it’s interesting to see a main character go from a little kid to an adult. Unlike many other shounen characters, Goku doesn’t have a clear goal or dream in life. He just enjoys fighting and competition in general. His major enemy? Himself. If anything, he aims to get better so that he can protect Earth and the people he loves.
