Dexter: It’s not everyday that we get a TV show featuring a psychopath as the main character. Let alone one that we actually want to root for.
In A Nutshell
The series follows Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a forensic specializing in blood spatter pattern analysis for the fictional Miami Metro Police Department. Dexter leads a secret life as a vigilante serial killer, hunting down murderers who have managed to escape the justice system.
Meet the Characters
Dexter Morgan is the main character of the series. Due to something that happened to him while he was a kid, Dexter is unable to feel any emotions like empathy or remorse. He’s not interested in friendships, romance, or sex. Dexter also has a craving for killing. However, when he was young, his father taught him ways to repress those urges. Ever since then, Dexter only uses his homicidal impulses to kill criminals who deserve it.
Debra Morgan is Dexter’s foster sister. Just like Dexter and their father, Debra wants to follow the family business and work in the Homicide Division. She’s very ambitious person, and she fights to be taken seriously, especially by LaGuerta. At the beginning of the series, Dexter states that he doesn’t feel many feelings, but if he ever were to care about anyone, that would be his sister.
Angel Batista is a detective in the Homicide Division, and a co-worker of Dexter and Debra. He usually works alongside Dexter in most cases, and he considers him to be his best friend. Angel is sometimes freaked out by Dexter’s passion for blood and the art of murder. He is portrayed as a friendly, humorous, and good-natured person. Because of this, he often works as a moral compass to Dexter.
María LaGuerta is introduced as the police captain of the Miami Metro Police Department. She’s a tough and ambitious person, although she’s shown to be more interested in politics and the public eye than actual justice and police work. LaGuerta shows signs of being romantically interested in Dexter, while she also harbors an intense dislike for his sister Debra.
A Brief History of Dexter: The When, Where and How
Dexter is an American television crime drama mystery series that aired on Showtime from October 2006 to September 2013. The show’s first season was adapted from the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. However, the series later evolved independently of Lindsay’s work.
The show has enjoyed mostly positive reviews throughout its run, and has become one of Showtime’s most watched original series. Dexter was also nominated for four consecutive Emmy awards for “Best Drama Series” starting in season 2.
Why It’s Awesome
Dexter is a classic for a reason. It’s not everyday that we get a TV show featuring a psychopath as the main character. Let alone one that we actually want to root for. Dexter explores themes of morality, and it does so in a thought-provoking way by talking about the differences between lack of empathy, psychopathy, sadism, or straight-up being a bad person. And yet, it manages to do so in a way that doesn’t glorify mental illness, nor does it justify killing. Needless to say, you don’t have to be a serial killer to get this show. Howeve,r anyone can relate to Dexter’s problems when it comes to not fitting in, or even agree with his internal monologue on society’s strange conventions.
As any other crime drama, Dexter can get quite grim sometimes, but the sunny Miami setting along with the casual exchanges between Dexter and his co-workers balances it out. The series also manages to be really exciting and unpredictable. Most of the time it’s a race between the police and Dexter to find the same culprit, which leaves a lot of room for suspense, cover ups, and the usual question of “will they find him out this time?”.
Dexter includes explicit and gorey scenes, along with lots of blood, so it’s definitely not a series for the faint of heart!
