Buffy the Vampire Slayer: One of the most iconic television series of the 90s. If you’re into supernatural creatures, female empowerment and Joss Whedon greatness, just what are you waiting for?!
In A Nushell
The series follows Buffy Summers, the latest in a line of young women known as “Vampire Slayers”, who are chosen by fate to battle against vampires, but also demons and other supernatural beings. Buffy is aided by a Watcher, a person who guides, teachers and trains her. Buffy also has her faitful friends from highschool, Willow and Xander, known as the Scooby Gang.
Meet the Characters
Buffy is the main character of the series. As a slayer, she is very skilled in fighting and very brave. However, she is tired of living a double life, as it often gives her problems with her school and her mother, having to constantly move out. Aside from that, Buffy is very friendly, loyal and the kind of person to live in the moment.
Rupert is Buffy’s new Watcher at the beginning of the series. He’s currently working undercover in the high school’s library. Even though he’s generally friendly, Rupert is also quite strict with Buffy, especially since it’s hard to convince her to forget to have a normal life and focus on her work as a Slayer instead.
Willow is a student in Buffy’s new high school. She’s a very shy, socially awkward girl who is looked down by others for being a “nerd” and a “freak”. Willow is very smart and sweet and is actually surprised when Buffy approaches her. She also usually hangs out with Xander, whom she has a crush on.
Xander is also a friend of Willow and is very quick to join the Scooby Gang, often showing excitement whenever Buffy’s got a mission. He’s unaware of Willow’s crush on him and he actually happens to be in love with Buffy. Xander is often sarcastic and is the kind of person to make jokes in the face of danger.
A Brief History of Buffy the Vampire Slayer: the When, Where and How
The series was very successful and it was nominated for both Emmy and Golden Globe awards, winning a total of three Emmys. The series’ success spans to several novels, comics and video games and has become a reference in pop culture and fandom academia.
Why It’s Awesome
As it’s already been mentioned, this series was created by Joss Whedon, the same man who created titles like Firefly, Agents of SHIELD or Angel. If you need more convincing, here’s what’s awesome about Buffy the Vampire Slayer:
Don’t let the title fool you – vampires have sadly gained a pretty bad reputation in recent years, but BTVSL doesn’t only deal with them in a traditional way, but also adds new supernatural creatures to the mixture, and it gets pretty apocalyptic pretty quickly. Both the supernatural and the human world are very well-built, and you will find yourself getting innmersed in the story and its setting pretty quickly.
From the very first episode, the characters are easy to like and relatable. Buffy has become an iconic TV character, not only because it was one of the first female main heroines on television, but because her character was never sexualized or belittled. Buffy felt real, and just like any other girl. It’s safe to say that her character was an inspiration for many young girls growing up. The rest of the cast are all unique in their own way and bring new different things to the story and new dynamics among the characters.
Yes, it’s quite an old show, so it does have laughable special effects and some too-common tropes that will make you roll your eyes, but you just have to bare with it cause it’s definitely worth it in the long run.
