Attack on Titan: 5 Mysteries to Look Out For in Season 2

Attack on Titan Season 2

Attack on Titan Season 2 is only days away now, and fans are growing more and more eager to get the answers to many of the questions from Season 1. If it’s been a while since you watched the first season, we recommend you watch the two recap movies to refresh your memory. Either way, these next questions will remind you of the key points you should keep in mind for Season 2.

NOTE: This post assumes you are an anime-only, meaning
you have watched the first season, but you haven’t read the manga!

Will Annie wake up and reveal her motives?

Attack on Titan - Crystallized Annie
The second half of the first season focused on the Female Titan, who was later revealed to be Annie Leonhart. Annie was one of the most mysterious characters of the series, and she always looked serious and preferred to keep to herself. She also had some great commentary on the ironic contradiction of the training system in the army. Annie always gave the vibe that she knew more than the others on whatever was going on.

At the end of the season, Annie was beaten by Eren in an epic battle that nearly destroyed the Stohess District. However, all was for nothing: Annie quickly used her hardening abilities and sealed herself in a crystal shell. After that, the Survey Corps locked her crystallized form in an underground facility, where they’re currently waiting for her to wake up to interrogate her. Annie could shed some light on the nature of Titan shifters, as well as be explaining what was her ulterior motive when fighting the army and trying to kidnap Eren.

How could Annie summon other Titans?

Attack on Titan - Annie summoning titans
Speaking of Annie, the Female Titan confused everyone when she let a growl that summoned other Titans to the forest to devour her. At the moment, she did so because Levi’s squad had trapped her, and she couldn’t risk her identity being exposed. We only know of another Titan shifter in the story: Eren. And, so far, he hasn’t shown to have that ability.

So is this summoning ability something that all titan shifters can do, or an ability that was unique to Annie? And, if so, how many different abilities can titan shifters have?

Why was there a titan inside the wall?

Attack on Titan - Titan inside the wall
And are we supposed to assume all the walls are full of titans? We know titans die if they don’t get any sunlight, so it makes sense that they would be dormant inside the walls. But still, what are they doing inside the walls? Did someone put them in there? And if so, who is aware of this? Does it have anything to do with the government’s corruption?

As a matter of fact, the origin of the Walls is still a mystery. We know there’s even a religion to praise the Walls, and that humanity has been living inside them for as long as everyone can remember. But how exactly were these Walls constructed? Who built them? And how was it even possible to build them while being attacked by titans from the outside?

Where did Grisha Jaeger go?

Attack on Titan - Grisha Jaeger
Grisha Jaeger, Eren’s father,
was only seen in the first episode, and then through Eren’s dreams and confusing flashbacks. Grisha is said to be a renown doctor, and someone very appreciated both among the Shiganshina citizens, and the army (seen as when instructor Keith Shadis mentioned him).

After the fall of Shiganshina, he never appears again. He doesn’t contact Eren, and it’s also quite strange how neither Eren nor Mikasa ever wonders where he is. Did he die? Is he hiding somewhere? Apart from being the father of the main character, he also seemed to be quite knowledgeable. Eren has the key to the basement, but Grisha might be the one with all the answers. Will we see him again in Season 2?

What’s in the basement?

Attack on Titan - Eren's key to the basement
This is a big one. The biggest one. Apart from defeating the Titans, or leaving the walls to see the outside world, the key to Eren’s basement has always had the title of ‘series end goal’ to it. It’s because of this that we probably won’t’ bee getting any definite answers this season. However, we still might get some new clues as to where all of this is headed.

If Grisha is gone, then Eren’s key to the basement is the only hope the Survey Corps have of ever knowing what’s in it, and whether it could help humanity in any way. What’s the state of Eren’s house in Shiganshina? Does the basement contain any relevant information? Perhaps a weapon? And why was the Jaeger family in possession of this mysterious content?

These are 5 of the most poignant mysteries to be looking forward to in Season 2 of Attack on Titan. Do you think we will get an answer to any of them? Are there any more questions in your mind? Do you have any theories? Let us know your excitement in the comments below!
