Cosmo and his Martain crew are back in action with this all-new series: Cosmo the Mighty Martian #1. Cosmo the Merry Martian (what the comic was first called) had his first comic appearance all the way back in the late 1950s. Now, almost 60 years later, the series remains rebooted in 2018. On November 13th, Cosmo and his crew are back with this five-part action-packed sequel comic series. This issue was written by Ian Flynn, illustrated by Tracy Yardley, letters by Jack Morelli, and colors by Matt Herms.

Meet The Crew In Cosmo The Mighty Martian #1

The crew remains made up of six great space adventures. First and foremost there is Cosmo, the Mighty Martian; Orbi, Cosmo’s best friend; Astra, the pilot; Medulla, the scientist; Jojo, the faithful dog; and the human astronaut, Captain Max Strongjaw. Without a doubt, this team is fearlessly trying to save the planet from the evil Queen Hesper of Venus. Queen Hesper is currently sending her Battle Princess across the galaxy to take it over and to try and be the most attractive person in the whole galaxy.

The crew is heading towards Ceres to try and save the cerrets (Ceres’ residents) from Battle Princess Shih. The Battle Princess is able to turn the residents on a planet into mutated monsters through the use of aphrodite. Cosmo thinks they are all set to take on the Princess as they were able to defeat another batch of mutants on the moon with mixed soap and water. Cosmo would be wrong, though, as the creatures on Ceres have a completely different physiology makeup than the monsters they defeated on the moon.

Will the crew be able to make it out alive?

What Is Cosmo The Mighty Martian #1 About?

The story Flynn made for this space crew is entertaining to read. The characters all have their own personalities that you can connect with and you, as a reader, are about to understand the decisions they are making. They are all unique in their own way; for example, Medulla is a genius type character, she gets excited when she gets to be able to use her logic-shifting hexadecimal decrypting algorithm to get through the battle princess’ code for their information.

It is delightful to see a character being able to celebrate the things they like with pride. In this first issue, Flynn is creating a team that enjoys each other and gets along. In addition, the team will do anything for each other and have each other’s backs. We can tell just because of this first issue.

The Cosmo Illustrations & Color

Tracy Yardley’s illustrations are simple and cartoon-like, with simple shading and dynamic paneling. Yardley uses a form of pop art shading in his work. You don’t see a lot of that in this generation of comic art. It makes the art look unique and gives Cosmo The Mighty Martian #1 a blast of comic book history’s past. The colors that Matt Herms uses are neon and very punchy.

All the colors on the page stand out. Nothing is left in the background as everything has excellent colors that leave nothing on the sidelines. The colors and the illustrations mix with each other very well to make a cartoon-y comic that is very appealing to the eyes.
