The short-lived one (two-ish) season series on ABC Family in 2009 was a television adaptation of the cult classic film 10 Things I Hate About YouThe television series of the same name was created and premiered in 2009, being canceled in 2010 only after 20 episodes.

The show is now on Freeform, and as I am rewatching it, for all of its glory, I remember hearing this series was canceled, and I was so gutted because it had so much potential to be something great.

10 Things I Hate About You TV series was meant to be greater. Nonetheless, it got the Freaks and Geeks early cut and soon thereafter became a classic show under ABC Family’s lineup.

10 Things I Hate About You: The TV Series Characters

I loved the series, personally, and thought it was entertaining to watch. The characters, the actors, and the teen drama added a bonus every week when I watch the new episodes.

Lindsey Shaw as Kat Stratford who plays in Pretty Little Liars and from the old school show, Ned Declassified School Survival Guide. Meaghan Martin as Bianca Stratford who has played in Camp Rock on Disney Channel.

The ever so swoon-worthy Ethan Peck as Patrick Verona, who has played in a lot of good underrated films like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. Nicholas Braun as Cameron James, Braun played in a lot of Disney Channel series. Two other reoccurring characters are Dana Davis and Larry Miller.

10 Things I Hate About You

These characters are based on the cult classic film of the same name before them. They play each character well and close enough to the previous one that it’s honestly outstanding. One thing ABC Famly shows do not do well is acting, mostly, and remakes do not do the previous characters justice. This show does not do that. It gives justice to the ones that came before them.

Patrick Verona played by Peck is one of the most outstanding characters in the series. Alongside Peck is Shaw who plays Kat. Kat is a character that is hard to play because she is such a hardcore badass, that you could easily mess it up. Shaw does perfectly in her execution of Kat, and it reminds me very much so of the Kat in the cult classic film.

Why Did The Show Not Last?

This show was well before its time. Everyone says that after a show is canceled that they loved — but, this show truly was. People did not appreciate John Hughes as much in 2009 because it was same year he passed. No one knew quite what he did for film until years after.

There are some that did and some that worshipped the ground he walked on. However, a lot I would say didn’t quite know about Hughes’ style the way that they show was trying to replicate. His style was unique and angsty; it was something like many even now cannot seem to replicate perfectly. The show did it well, however.

10 Things I Hate About You

The show didn’t last because it wasn’t on the right network. This show was an ABC or FOX teen drama show — even The CW because of Riverdale now. This show could have been something long-lasting. The acting was subpar, at times, although better than Riverdale. And, each show was a mini-movie — something you wanted to keep watching again and again because it reminded you of the 80s.

Should The Show Come Back?

I think the show was good when it was good, and that was it. If it came back, it would be entirely different, and the aspects we loved would be changed. I feel like it was something that happened, something good, and was gone before its time was up. And, that sadly happens with TV shows across the networks.

If it were to come back the actors and actresses would be different, they could not bring back the old ones sadly. That would be something to think about — and, the show would switch genres. It would either be a CW show or a Fox show. CW it could stay similarly to how it was, but family-friendly Fox — it would have to change around a little.
