Why you should celebrate Love Felicia Day Day

0

Today we’re gonna ignore all the wank going on and some of the things that female gamers have to go through. In case you don’t know the recent events, Felicia wrote a post on her Tumblr with her thoughts and fears on GamerGate. After that, someone commented doxxing her with what they claimed was her home address. But we don’t think those people deserve our attention. No,  today is a day to celebrate the gift that is geek women like Felicia Day. In case you’ve been living under a rock and you don’t know who this woman is, here’s a brief summary:

Felicia is a 35-year-old American actress. She’s known for being a public figure in the geek world. You can currently find her on her personal Youtube channel and on her company Geek & Sundry where she appears on shows like Co-Optitude and Wil Wheaton’s TableTop. This is basically why she’s not seen as just another actress, but an active member of the geeky community. She’s even been referenced as “the queen of Comic Con“.

The original idea for this Love Felicia Day Day comes from Tumblr user purplesummer91.

1. SHE’S PROBABLY IN YOUR FAVORITE TV SHOW

She’s played Charlie Bradbury on Supernatural, Vi on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dr. Holly Marten on Eureka, Penny on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog… Even as an actress, she’s always participating in what are considered fantasy or sci-fi shows. Give her a few years, and she could be the next Mark Sheppard!

2. SHE’S THE CREATOR OF THE GUILD

OK who here hasn’t watched The Guild? The Guild is a webseries that follows the life of 6 friends who are obsessed with an online RPG that they call “The Game” (inspired by World of Warcraft). And no, you can’t compare it to The Big Bang Theory or Silicon Valley. To these people, leaving the house or living a social life is out of the question. It gets to the point where some of the characters might need professional help. Despite all that, the show is full of comedy, friendship and a passion for gaming. It is also loosely based on Felicia’s experience as a gamer.

3. SHE HAS CREATED SOME GREAT GEEK HITS

The Guild released three different songs to promote their seasons: Do You Wanna Date My Avatar, I’m the One that’s Cool and Game On. They all featured in our Geeky Music Compillation. Felicia wrote the lyrics for Do You Wanna Date My Avatar, co-wrote them on I’m the One that’s Cool and Game On. You can also listen to other stuff like her parody of Gotye, A User that I Used to Know, on her personal channel.

4. SHE’S THE NICEST WITH HER FANS

Felicia doesn’t like being considered as a celebrity and generally acts very friendly towards anyone who stops her to ask for a photo or an autograph. She’s always happy to meet her fans so don’t feel shy if you see her walking around Comic Con! Fans’ experiences on conventions and photo ops are always positive. Also, she’s often engaging with her fans on Twitter and Tumblr.

5. SHE’S A ROLE MODEL FOR YOUNG GEEK WOMEN (AND ALL WOMEN IN GENERAL)

What recently happened for Felicia Day in the gaming community is an example of why we need more women like her. Felicia is not just a gamer girl, she’s also an incredibly good and nice person. We know the insecurities that usually come with being a girl in the geek community, especially when it comes to speaking with men that might look at you with skeptic eyes. That is probably why Felicia is seen as a role model or someone to look up to when we’re feeling that way. Because we know she’s been there, and because she’s putting us in the map and makes us feel like we could all be welcomed in the future.

And, for that, we thank you Felicia Day and give you all our support.

Share.
