Ouran High School Host Club: One of the most popular school comedies of all time. This series is entertaining, funny and probably more sweet than you expected it to be.

In a Nutshell

Fujioka Haruhi is a middle-class boy who wins a scholarship to attend Ouran Academy, a high school for the most rich and prestigious. One day, Haruhi accidentally bumps into a room where the Host Club boys work. The Host Club is an elite club with super rich and beautiful boys who use their charms and specific traits to entertain young ladies. Something will happen that will make Haruhi join the group.

Meet the Characters

Haruhi Fujioka

Haruhi Fujioka

It’s hard to say much about Haruhi without spoiling the end of the very first episode. All we can say is that, from the moment he joins Ouran Academy, Haruhi realises that he doesn’t really fit in: he’s not rich, neither does he care about money or physical appearance. In a world of self-loving rich boys, Haruhi works as the humble outer POV that shows how ridiculous some rich people are. He’s 16 years old.

Tamaki Suoh

Tamaki Suoh

Out of the original Host Club boys, you could say that Tamaki is the main character. Or, at least, the most successful and popular boy among the ladies. He’s also the founder of the club. His personality could be defined as narcissistic as he’s incredibly self-confident of his attractiveness and his flirting abilities. Despite of that, he’s not mean at all and cares a lot about his friends, referring to the club as his “family”. He’s 17 years old.

Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin

Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin are identical twins and are 15 year old. They are mischievous and like to mess with people. One of their favourite acts is pretending to have some sort of yaoi incest thing going one which makes the girls go crazy for some reason. Even though they are completely identical and even talk in unison, Haruhi is able to tell them apart.

Ouran High School Host Club

Mitsukuni ‘Honey’ Haninozuka

Mitsukuni Haninozuka, better known as ‘Honey’ serves as the cute member of the club. He’s actually 17, hard to believe considering that he both looks and acts so childish. His birthday is February 29 and the author has joked saying he only ages every four years because his birthday only comes on leap years. Despite his cute appearance, he’s actually a very good fighter.

Ouran High School Host Club

Kyoya Ootori

Kyoya is, next to Mori, one of the most quiet and serious of the club. He also happens to be his best friend. He’s the vice-president of the Host Club, although he acts more like the president than Tamaki. He’s also 17 and he’s very calculative, intelligent and secretive.

Ouran High School Host Club

Takashi ‘Mori’ Morinozuka

Mori is also 17 and is often seen as the protector of Honey. Just like him, he’s also a very skilled fighter as he is the national champion of kendo. Mori is seen as a tall, mysterious, quiet and intimidating boy. He rarely participates in conversations with the club.

Why It’s Awesome

ouran high school host club

To be honest, when I decided to start watching this series it was because I had heard A LOT about it and because I thought it would be very funny. After having watched Danshi Koukousei no Nichijou and watching Gintama, I decided to give it a shot. The first episode already has a big revelation in the last minutes, which is what made me really interested in the series and want to keep watching.

Yes, this is a shojo, but don’t foul yourself. There’s actually more comedy than romantic scenes at first which results in the series catching you by surprise when it adds a romantic element. You get so invested in these boys and their comedic scenes that you forget that this is actually a shojo and when there’s a profound moment or a sweet scene it’ll impact you much more hey, can these characters actually get serious?
