To all those Oncers who were unable to attend San Diego Comic-Con, I feel your pain. It’s a well-known fact that conventions are a chaotic combination of twitter stalking, rapid-fire reblogging, and continually crying because you are oceans away from all the action. But never fear: The Daily Fandom is here! And we’ve compiled all the best bits of the Once Upon a Time panel for your reading pleasure. Let’s get this party started!
This year’s panel was chock full of sneak previews and surprise twists. Things kicked off with a chilling trailer for Season 5 that broadcast an ominous message: ‘The Dark Swan Shall Rise’.
After the clip had set the audience abuzz with speculation, the actors took to the stage. There were some adorable shenanigans as they switched name cards, and the panel began with some light-hearted questions. Emilie de Ravin told us what she wants for Belle this season (‘A vacation!’), while Josh Dallas divulged his favourite aspect of playing a villain (‘wearing guyliner’).
We then learned a bit about Season 5. We can expect to see Mr Gold in a coma, and a new aspect of his personality will be brought to light as he copes with his loss of power. Jennifer Morrison stated that Emma’s confidence was shaken after the revelation that she was born with the potential for evil. In contrast, Regina will enter the season with a stable mindset, as becoming one of the heroes has helped her to find support and love.
Panel attendees were treated to a clip about why residents choose to stay in Storybrooke despite the near-constant threats to their lives. The full mockumentary will be available on the Season 4 Blu-Ray and DVD. If it’s anything like previous special features such as Singlebrooke and Good Morning Storybrooke, it’ll be entirely hilarious.
Fans of Funko will be delighted to know that the company is finally adding Once Upon a Time to its Pop!Vinyl range. The Captain Hook, Emma Swan, Prince Charming, Regina, Rumplestiltskin, and Snow White Pop!s will be released sometime in October.
The third video of the day was a first look at the Dark Swan, which showed Emma mercilessly crushing a man’s heart while sporting some Gollum-like makeup (and lots of glitter). Scary stuff! And oh so intriguing. I for one am beyond excited to see our Saviour’s inner darkness unleashed.
Colin O’Donoghue spoke about his character, including the possibility of Killian reverting to his former villainy due to Dark!Emma’s influence. It was also stated that Camelot exists in a parallel timeline to Storybrooke, meaning we may see it in flashbacks, flash-forwards, or present-day happenings.
Series creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis teased the possibility of a musical episode, as well as announcing that they have something ‘very special’ planned for the show’s one hundredth episode.
Then, in true Once Upon a Time fashion, the panel ended with the biggest twist yet: a sneak peek which revealed that Once will be incorporating Princess Merida into its extensive character line-up next season. The Pixar Princess joins a long list of movie heroines portrayed within the show (Elsa, Anna, Mulan, Snow White, and Cinderella, just to name a few).
All of this new information forms an incomplete puzzle about the plot of Season 5. We know we’ll be getting Dark!Emma, a Camelot arc, and Princess Merida, but how will these components fit together? Looks like we’ll just have to wait to find out. Can September 27 hurry up and get here already?!
