‘Kekkai Sensen’ Finale Delayed, Thoughts On the Series’ Pacing

0

The official website for Kekkai Sensen, also known as Blood Blockade Battlefront, has just announced that the final episode has been delayed once more.

This twelfth and final episode had already been delayed and announced for the 4th of July on MBS. However, MBS had already planned the long-awaited premiere of Durarara!!x2 Ten for the same timeslot. On the other hand, the production committee also explained that the staff determined that this finale episode could not air in a 30-minute timeslot since the episode would take longer than that. The final broadcast dates and times have yet to be determined and will be announced on the anime’s official page and Twitter account. This weekend, instead of the final episode, a special program will air.

Despite its original concept and crazy aesthetics and animation, it’s no secret that the series’ pacing has been off for the most episodes. Just taking a look at different anime forums, the majority of viewers were confused with the first episode alone because there was so much stuff going on, and had to rewatch it to understand what was really happening.

To me, every episode was like this except for episode 11, ‘Paint it Black’, which was one of the best anime episodes I’ve seen this year, next to Death Parade‘s ‘Memento Mori’.

In a series consisting of only 12 episodes which almost always means lots of rushing and considering that they had a filler episode (‘Don’t Forget to Don’t Forget Me’) and that they dedicated half of an episode to the protagonists looking for a place to eat (as funny as Leo’s ‘food punishment’ scene was), I find it strange that they are now struggling to wrap up the series because of time issues. Couldn’t they have skipped the filler episode and split the finale in two episodes? Without having read the manga, it almost seems like this anime’s executions lacked a lot of planning. We’ll have to wait and see if the finale was really worth it!
