How I Met Your Mother: The sitcom that many consider to be the natural successor of F.R.I.E.N.D.S. The show that made us all come up with crazy theories for over 9 years. And the show that will go down in TV history as one of the best and most memorable sitcoms in the 2000s, if not the best.
In A Nutshell
How I Met Your Mother follows Ted Mosby, a 30-year-old who’s telling his kids the story of… well, how he met their mother. Ted has a problem when it comes to keeping his stories to the point so he ends up telling them the whole story of his life when he was younger and lived in New York with his best friends.
Meet the Characters
Ted is the main character and narrator of the story. He’s what you’d call a dreamer and he’s very romantic. So much that he always ends up getting his heart broken. He works as an architect and lives with his best friends from college, Lily and Marshall. He has a major crush on Robin since the moment he meets her.
Lily is Marshall’s girlfriend and one of Ted’s best friends from college. She works as a kinder garden teacher but her true dream is to become an artist. She’s cheeky but very sweet and caring when her friends need her. She works as a big sister to Ted, who helps to keep him grounded when his romantic expectations are too high.
Marshall is Ted’s best friend from college and Lily’s boyfriend. He studies Law, which makes him have to stay at home studying when the others are out having fun. He’s very funny and loves eating. Both Lily and him work as Ted’s parents.
If Ted and Lily are in charge of keeping Ted sane, Barney is there to make sure he does the craziest stuff. You probably already know him even though you haven’t watched the show. He loves women and sex (doesn’t believe in relationships). He’s always wearing a suit and he’s all about being cool and doing cool stuff. He has a big repertoire of catch phrases and nobody knows what he works at but he’s got a lot of money.
The last one to enter the group was Robin. She’s a journalist and lives with her five dogs. She’s very strong and independent and, like Barney, she doesn’t believe in love. She’s very honest and sarcastic but, deep down, she also has feelings which she shows every now and then.
A Brief History of ‘How I Met Your Mother’
How I Met Your Mother is an American sitcom that aired on CBS from 2005 to 2014. The series was created by Craig Thomas and Carter Bays and the story was loosely inspired by their friendship and their relationship with their wives when they both lived in New York City.
The show was nominated for 28 Emmy Awards and won 9. Alyson Hannigan and Neil Patrick Harris have both won People’s Choice Awards for their acting and Harris also received Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.
Why It’s Awesome
It’s not news that this show has won a cult following for their humor, characters and story making abilities. Like I’ve previously stated, you probably already know some of the faces of these actors due to how many times you’ve seen gifs with funny quotes on Tumblr (aside from the fact that they’re really talented actors who have starred in other shows and movies).
This series has the potential to stay in people’s minds for years because, even though it finished over a year ago, many people agree that HIMYM marked the 2000s just like F.R.I.E.N.D.S marked the 1990s. Phrases like “legen-wait for it- dary“, “self-five” or “challenge accepted” have become pop culture references and some cities even had an International Suit Up Day in which everybody would wear a suit in honor of Barney Stinson. HIMYM has also ventured in doing some musical numbers, like the unforgettable Nothing suits me like a suit or the incredibly fun Let’s go to the mall.
On another note, HIMYM is not just a story about friends being friends. There’s an extra factor: the mystery of who is the mother. It’s also not just another sitcom that bases all their character interactions in funny situations. There’s also a lot of drama in this series. HIMYM knows how to explore the meaning of friendship and the struggle when you’re trying to figure out what to do with your life.
However, like many other sitcoms, the series is still quite unrealistic because it portrays being in your 20s like living in an amazing flat in New York City and going out for drinks every night with your friends cause you’re financially stable like that. The series finale, which consisted of an hour long episode, was pretty controversial and got mixed reactions. So much that they actually released and alternate ending.
Regardless of that, this series is still amazing and a must for any sitcom lover because it provides a perfect balance between comedy and drama with many love and life lessons from the adorable Ted. So suit up and start watching the first episode today!
