Highschool of the Dead: It’s like The Walking Dead, but with high school students. And lots of boobs.
In a Nutshell:
A strange lethal disease has spread worldwide resulting in people turning into zombies and spreading chaos everywhere. The story focuses in a few high school students from Japan who band together to escape the school and fight together to survive and live another day.
Meet the Characters
Takashi is the narrator and main character of the series. He is a natural leader and one of the only characters to keep a cool head when things go bady. Even though he’s also shocked at the new situation they are in, Takashi is brave and won’t hesitate to throw himself into action to protect others. He has also had a crush on Rei since they were both kids.
Rei is Takashi’s childhood friend. At the beginning of the series, she is dating another guy, which makes Takashi very jealous. Rei is strong in battle and uses spears. She also has a very strong personality, which leads to a lot of bickering with Takashi. She is mainly mad at him for his indecisiveness to ask her out.
Saeko is older than the rest of the students. She is in her third-year and she is also the president of the school’s kendo club. Because of this, she is one of the strongest members of the group and she’s often seen carrying a katana. From the beginning, Saeko comes of as a quiet, calm and mysterious person, especially compared to the other girls.
Saka is an A-grade student who takes pride in her intelligence. She is arrogant and bossy, although she is not very skilled in battle and is usually one of the members who is more afraid of zombies. Saya has also been childhood friends with Takashi and often tells him off for his wrong decisions. It’s hinted that she has feelings for Takashi too.
Kohta is introduced next to Saka, who doesn’t treat him very well. Kohta is seen as an otaku and a loser in high school, but when it comes to weapons (especially guns), he’s an expert. He doesn’t only know how to use all types of guns, but he’s also not afraid to use them and seems to enjoy killing the undead, probably because he takes it as if he were playing a videogame.
Shizuka is a nurse at the school, which places her as the oldest member of the group. She is also the only one who can drive, so she always takes the role of driving the rest of the group around. Despite being able to cure people, she is very insecure and afraid of all the violence around her. She is also one of the most sexualized of the females and her huge breasts are often used as comedic relief.
A Brief History of Highschool of the Dead: the When, Where and How
Highschool of the Dead is an original manga series written by Daisuke Satou and illustrated by Shouji Satou. The series has been serialized in Fujimi Shobo‘s Monthly Dragon Age since 2006 and has been on hiatus since. A 12-episode anime adaptation produced by Madhouse aired in Japan from July 5, 2010 to September 20, 2010.
Why It’s Awesome
The thing about Highschool of the Dead is that it can be really good and really bad at the same time. Since this section is dedicated to saying good things about the series, let me get the negative things out of the way first as some sort of warning. This anime is ecchi. And by ‘ecchi’ I mean nearly hentai level (think Prison School). If you are easily offended by outrageous fanservice, you’re probably not going to like this series.
So what is so awesome about Highschool of the Dead? Well, for starters, it’s an apocalyptic scenario, something that we all seem to love, especially when it adds some zombies in the middle. The series features everything that a zombie apocalypse should have: chaos, gore, the media failing spectacularly, some politics and people showing their true colors. Don’t fool yourself, though. This is a short anime and the spotlight is on the main characters and the things they do to survive, so don’t expect to see too much from the adults.
Lastly, you can’t really talk about Highschool of the Dead without talking about its animation and direction. The animation is just what you might expect from Studio Madhouse, but the best thing about the series is the direction by Tetsurou Araki (Death Note, Attack on Titan…) and his use of overly dramatic shots and vertiginous sequences that make any anime 100% more exciting to watch.
