Dark Matter: A fresh new look on the sci-fi genre.
In a Nutshell
The six-person crew of a derelict spaceship awakens from stasis in the farthest reaches of space. Their memories wiped clean, they have no recollection of who they are or how they got on board. The only clue to their identities is a cargo bay full of weaponry and a destination: a remote mining colony that is about to become a war zone. With no idea whose side they are on, they face a deadly decision. Will these amnesiacs turn their backs on history, or will their pasts catch up with them?
Meet the Characters
One was the first one to emerge from stasis, and was designated “One” for this reason. He is both charming and goofy. He is the moral center of the crew, showing both integrity and the will to fight for what is right even if it seems to be a lost cause. He may make mistakes, but he always means well.
Two is the leader of the Raza and she is fiercely protective of her crew. With the added physical and mental boost from the bioengineered nanites teeming through her system, she is a formidable opponent. She shows both strength and compassion, and she is also determined and headstrong and won’t let anyone or anything stand in her way.
Three‘s bottom line is his own well-being. He’s immoral, cocky, and exhibits a strong sense of self-preservation. Because of this, he has to learn to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with his crew. Three is also experienced with a wide range of firearms.
Despite being the youngest crew member, Five is definitely not to be underestimated. Even if she’s seen as the crew mascot, she is extremely proficient in electrical engineering and enjoys working with wires, circuits and fuses. Her ability to adapt and survive is only matched by her tech skills and her will to keep the crew of the Raza together.
Even though Six may look intimidating, he actually has a heart of gold. Six is extremely intelligent and has the ability to handle issues and disappointment with strength and grace. Six demonstrates a singular aptitude for piloting the Phantom class shuttle ‘Marauder’.
Only referred to as “The Android”, the character’s child-like eagerness to fit in has helped her become an integral, albeit unique, part of the crew. As she engages with the crew, she both grows and learns to understand human actions and emotions.
A Brief History of Dark Matter: the When, Where and How
Dark Matter is a Canadian science fiction series created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie, based on their comic book of the same name. The series is developed by Prodigy Pictures in association with Space channel and premiered on Syfy in the United States on the same day as Canada, on June 12th, 2015. The first season consisted of 13 episodes.
Why It’s Awesome
Dark Matter is definitely a fresh new look on the sci-fi genre. It tackles the universe in the perspective where corporations run everything, even though there is a galactic government.
The crew of the Raza aren’t exactly heroes, but they aren’t truly villains either. Throughout the first season, the crew’s past is revealed for each of them. It shows a different version than what they had begun to think of themselves, making them more anti-heroes than anything else.
