Daredevil: One of Netflix’s most popular series. These are all the reasons why you should watch the most critically acclaimed American superhero show!
In A Nutshell
Based on the MARVEL comic character, Daredevil follows Matt Murdock’s life as a lawyer-by-day, vigilante-by-night. Matt is a blind man who is working to establish a new law firm along with his best friend Foggy Nelson and their co-worker Karen Page while trying to keep his double identity secret from his friends.
Meet the Characters
Matt is the main character in the series. Blinded as a young boy, he was gifted with extraordinary senses which he uses to fight despite being blindfolded. After his father was murdered by mobsters, Matt began training to dedicate his life to fighting for justice in the city. During the day he works as a lawyer, but at night he becomes a vigilante known as Daredevil.
Foggy is Matt’s best friend. They met at law school and also interned together at Landman and Zack. They started their own law firm in Hell’s Kitchen, where Nelson claims to want to fight for ‘the little guy’. Foggy’s character is often used for comedic relief, especially when he gets frustrated at Matt for getting them in trouble for wanting to do the right thing. He doesn’t know about Matt’s secret night life.
Karen is the first client of Nelson and Murdock. In return for helping her out, Karen starts working as a secretary for their firm. Karen is still traumatized by the events that happened to her, which has caused her to see the city from a new perspective. She becomes great friends with Karen and Foggy, especially with the latter.
A Brief History of Daredevil: the When, Where and How
Daredevil is an American web television series created by Drew Goddard for Netflix. The series is based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name and its universe shares continuity with the films of the franchise. Daredevil also works as the first in the series of shows that will lead up to a Defenders crossover miniseries.
The first season was released on April 10th, 2015, while the second one came out on March 18th, 2016. The series has received worldwide critical acclaim for its action sequences, performances and the darker tone compared to other properties set in the MCU. As a result, a spin-off series centered on Frank Castle and tiled Marvel’s The Punisher was ordered by Netflix in April 2016.
Why It’s Awesome
Even though we are living a golden era for superhero productions in film and television, sometimes it’s hard to feel too engaged with these stories because we already know the good guys will win. The hero’s superpowers are no only what drives the story, but also what makes them succeed at the end of the day. This is where Daredevil stands out. And it’s kind of ironic considering how useful and convenient Matt’s senses are. His powers don’t only work in his favor when fighting villains, but also when working as a lawyer and being able to tell if someone is lying. However, this doesn’t take away from the feeling of danger a series like this should have. Matt cannot always stop things even though he knows they’re going to happen, so the stakes are still high. In fact, Daredevil is quite dark and doesn’t shy away from showing how cruel life can be someimes.
One of the things that have been commented on the most about this show is the fights. If the fact that Matt is fighting while being blind and blind-folded is not impressive enough, the fighting choreography and camera sequences make them all the most mesmerizing. It’s fair to say that the action, which is a key aspect in any superhero story, is a big part of what makes this series so great. Furthermore, the characters are not only well-made, but the casting is also great. The main trio are all likable and it’s easy to get attached to them quickly. The villain, Wilson Fisk, is also very charismatic and actually evokes fear in the viewer.
Daredevil is an excellent adaptation and one that has managed to earn the love and respect of many MARVEL fans. If anything, this should be a pretty good sign of what’s to come from Netflix’s Defenders miniseries.
