CONfabulation is a new multifandom convention taking place in Pittsburgh, PA, from 25-28th of May 2017. It doesn’t matter what it is that you love – if you are in a fandom, CONfabulation is the ideal con for you!
That’s because CONfabulation defines itself as “a celebration of fandom.” It offers anything from a wide variety of panels to workshops and dancing activities (this year’s theme is Masquerade!). CONfabulation is also open for all types of people: whether you are an introvert or an extrovert, there are activities for you at your own comfort level. Taking place in May, the convention lasts from 5PM on Thursday the 25th until midnight on Sunday, 28th.
What follows is a letter written by Bryn, Chair of Public Relations of CONfabulation, on her experience on fandom and the idea behind CONfabulation:
I first found fandom when I was a teenager. I was homeschooled with no friends in real life, and my world revolved around my favorite television show – Young Hercules. I found a message board online full of people who were talking about the show, roleplaying as characters, and writing fanfic… and suddenly I was home. I had found people like me, people who loved the same thing I loved and were excited to share that feeling with each other. Fandom opened up a whole new world for me, and for the first time I made real friends that I could talk to.
I’m in my thirties now, and I still tend to be a loner. I have anxiety and depression, and have trouble talking to people in real life. Fandom never fails to accept me, and all of my dearest friends were found through a shared fandom interest. When I’m on the internet, I can really be myself and relax among people who truly get me.
That feeling of acceptance, of returning to the mothership? That’s what you can find at CONfabulation. It’s the warm embrace of the internet come to life. It’s a feeling of home, of having a place to talk about what excites you, what fascinates you, and being around people who are excited and fascinated by the same thing.
At CONfabulation, I can choose my level of involvement. All the programming is fan suggested and run, so I can be on a panel and spaz about why I love Soulmate AUs, or how Buffy the Vampire Slayer changed my life. I can run a Plushie-Making Workshop and help people learn to sew for the first time. And when my anxiety and depression kick in, I can adjust my level of involvement. I can choose to sit at the edge of the conversation and listen, or retreat to my room for a bit of quiet time – there’s no judgement here. We’re all internet people, and we all know what it’s like to need time to recharge.
CONfabulation is my found family. It’s the home-away-from-home where I am free to be me. It’s a safe space where I can make new friends and reconnect with old ones. Come join us!
