Can Ben Affleck Live Up to the Hype of a Stand-Alone Batman Film?

After a record-breaking opening weekend that saw Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice rake in $166.1 million in the North American box office, Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara broke the news about a solo Batman film in the works. During the CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Tsujihara announced that Ben Affleck would write and reprise his role as the Dark Knight. The Oscar winner is also expected to direct the upcoming Batman movie, though Tsujihara didn’t exactly confirm it in the event.

For some hardcore fans, this news is a breath of fresh air, considering how talented Ben Affleck is both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. On the physical side of it, Affleck fits the overall look of a well-aged Batman. The Caped Crusader has that significant jawline, which Affleck does have. Like a typical superhero, the two also share a hulking, chiseled body. What Ben Affleck adds – an aspect that neither George Clooney nor Christian Bale had – is the substantial contributions behind the lens.

Ben Affleck is a certified talent when it comes to film-making. He’s received plenty of recognition from various award-giving bodies throughout the years. These include: an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting, as well as a Golden Globe Award for Best Director and Best Picture in the 2012 film Argo. Every accomplishment adds up to his stature as a true Hollywood star. In more ways than one, all signs lead to Affleck putting and leaving his mark on the coveted Batman franchise.

Like Ben Affleck in Tinseltown, Batman is also a prevalent character in pop culture. Bruce Wayne’s alter ego has been a timeless fixture in comic books such as the classic Detective Comics series, as well as modern day graphic novels by Neil Gaiman, Frank Miller, and Geoff Johns. Ironically, Johns will co-write the forthcoming Batman flick with Ben Affleck. The Dark Knight‘s popularity has also spurred his arrival in the gaming world. He’s been in best-selling console games like Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight, in addition to Spin Genie’s online slot machine variant The Dark Knight Rises. All in all, Batman has become more than just a cape-wearing, night-lurking figure: he’s established himself as a true icon.

Time will only tell whether this new Batman movie franchise can live up to the hype. The partnership of a talented mind in Ben Affleck and an all-encompassing machine like Warner Bros. sure has the ideal ingredients for a Hollywood blockbuster. So here’s to more success of the future Batman film!
