Attack on Titan: The kind of story that will have you on the edge of your seat episode after episode. One of the most hyped, epic and popular stories in recent anime. Still not watching it?
In A Nutshell
Centuries ago, humans were nearly exterminated by Titans, very tall human-looking beings that go around devouring humans. The small percentage of humans who survived built three big Walls to live inside and be protected from the Titans. However, back in the present, the first and outer Wall was destroyed by a colossal Titan. From that day on, Eren Jaeger, his sister Mikasa and his best friend Armin, witness nothing but horror and cruelty and will have to train to get into the Survey Corps and exterminate all Titans.
Meet the Characters
Eren is the main character of the story. As many shounen protagonists, he’s very hot headed and impetuous. Eren is driven by revenge and has a thirst for murdering Titans. While many people don’t see anything special or remarkable about him, his anger and determination are his best qualities and inspire everyone around him.
Mikasa is Eren’s foster sister. She is probably the most badass female you will find in nowadays mainstream anime. Opposite to Eren, she is thoughtful and doesn’t let emotions control her actions. She admires Eren very much and serves as his protector. She excels in everything she does and is usually respected by everyone around her.
Armin is Eren and Mikasa’s best friend from childhood. Unlike Eren and Mikasa, Armin is shy and has self-esteem issues, often seeing himself as weaker and inferior to his friends. Armin has a desire to know what’s outside the Walls and travel the whole world. Despite not believing in himself, Armin is very intelligent and is an excellent strategist.
A Brief History of Attack on Titan: The When, Where and How
Attack on Titan is a manga series by Hajime Isayama. The manga started being serialised in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Shounen Magazine in 2009. 17 volumes have been released since. An anime version came out in 2013, which gave the series a lot more popularity. The franchise only expanded from there: videogames, light novels, movies, live-action movies and TV shows, attractions at Universal Studios Japan and LOTS of merchandise.
The first season has 25 episodes. The second season has been long anticipated and is expected to finally come out in 2016.
Why It’s Awesome
Many people will tell you that Attack on Titan is the Game of Thrones of anime. They do share a lot of similarities: they are hugely successful, they both have amazing production and they don’t have any problems with cruelly killing main characters.
Attack on Titan‘s stronger points is that it’s an epic story full of big revelations and plot twists to the point that you can never be too sure about anything, whether that is your favourite character’s safety, their true intentions or the history of humanity itself. The best part is that you get to experience those big revelations at the same time as the characters making you, the viewer, a participant of the story.
In fact, its amazing drawing and animation will make you feel like you are inside those Walls too. It is, by far, the best animation I have seen in an anime. There is a lot of detail in the cities and the animation of the action scenes could even make you sick, all of it accompanied by its great OST.
